Abstract

Prostaglandins in human gastric juice and human saliva were determined by radioimmunoassay after extraction and chromatography on silicic acid columns. Basal levels in gastric juice were found to be 443.8 ± 49.0 pg/ml prostaglandin E 2 and 153.7 ± 23.6 pg/ml prostaglandin A 2. Prostaglandin F 2α was below 50 pg/ml in most cases. The prostaglandin A 2 found seems to be secreted as prostaglandin E 2 which is dehydrated after secretion at the low pH of gastric juice. Some of the prostaglandin A 2 might also come from saliva. Pentagastrin stimulation of gastric secretion did not significantly change the concentrations of prostaglandins in gastric juice, but tended to increase the total output of prostaglandins concomitantly with the increase in volume of gastric secretion.
