Abstract

Quantitative determination of monomers by pyrolysis/capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was carried out for several acrylic copolymers, including some which have an acid monomer. In addition to the monomers, most of the secondary reaction products were properly identified. For all the copolymers studied, possible thermal cleavage mechanisms were proposed. By including all the secondary reaction products, the relative weight percent of monomers was calculated. Finally, the recovery of polymers was calculated from all the secondary reaction products and monomers.
