Abstract

THE PURSUIT OF IMPROVED quality of care is undertaken formally and informally by surgeons on a constant basis and on multiple levels. As a topic of study, quality of care is formidable in scope and complexity and is, therefore, best addressed with an organized approach. In this overview, the perspective of health services research as it pertains to quality of care in surgery will be defined. The goal of this effort will be to give nomenclature and structure to the topic and, in doing so, review important concepts, challenges, and directions for the future.
