Abstract

Objective The paper aims to explore the psychological status of the parents who have lost their only child. Methods Based on semi-structural interviews of five families purposive samples who have lost their only child in Wuhan, the author analyzes their psychological status by phenomenology methods of qualitative research. Results The life of parents who have lost their only child changes greatly. Apart from a serious psychological harm, they were greatly concerned about their elderly care and mental support. Conclusions Parents who have lost their only child should adjust to the great change in their lives. The government and society should provide effectively financial and mental support. Only in this way can parents who have lost their only child obtain a normal life, which is beneficial to the social harmony and stability.
