Abstract

The publication in Historical Studies [Lishi yanjiu] of "A Re-evaluation of Superfluous Words" by Chen Tiejian and "A Comprehensive Assessment Should Be Made of Qu Qiubai" by Wang Weili and Du Wenjun has provoked great interest and heated discussion among the third-year students in the University of Hangzhou history department. Recently they conducted a probing examination of Superfluous Words. Their discussion revolved around three questions: why did Qu Qiubai write this work, how should we characterize its major tendency, and what explains the erroneous ideas to be found in it.
