Pure Islamic Study Programs in Indonesia: Scientific Paradigms, Challenges, and Sustainability Initiatives
This article seeks answers by discussing the scholarly paradigm of Islamic study programs in Indonesia, the challenges of era 4.0, and the efforts they are making to survive. Pure Islamic Studies program is one that teaches predominantly Islamic texts or is monodisciplinary. The program has been proven to contribute to a skilled and professional workforce, although this is doubtful for the future. The phenomenon of being disinterested, unproductive, and even closed down indicates that pure Islamic studies programs are facing serious problems. The research is based on primary and secondary data. Primary data collection comes from observations and interviews. Meanwhile, secondary data was obtained from articles and related policy documents. This article found that the difficulty of pure Islamic study programs to compete is not only caused by market-driven and sophisticated technological developments, but also the conceptual-analytical paradigm originating from the Middle East has been deeply rooted in the learning methods. Islamic study program managers have made efforts by expanding partnership networks, strengthening informal education, and publishing information on social media. This study points to the importance of taking into account the needs of the market and aligning them with the ultimate goal of graduates. Supporting various activities aimed at developing students’ skills beyond those learned in the program is needed.

In fact, many panelists during the course of theconference talked about the importance of Said's research to their ownwork.Regular AMSS attendees such as myself would tell you that this conferencewas a tightly organized orchestra of excellent sessions, one after theother. The number of sessions was smaller than usual, and there were fewerparallel sessions, probably because far more academic rigor had been exercisedin selectiong papers than had been the case in previous conferences.A special delight on the first day was the lunch and jumu'ah prayer atthe Bloomington Islamic Center, catered and served by BloomingtonMuslim community volunteers. After these events, the conference beganin earnest. The opening panel, "A Political Philosophical Perspective onIslam and Democracy," featured M. A. Muqtedar Khan (Adrian College),who addressed the theoretical aspects of this debate, and Nazia Khandwalla(University of Texas), who looked at the debate in an empiricalstudy of slum-dwelling women in Karachi ...

This workshop, co-organized by the Regional Studies Program, WalailakUniversity, Thailand, and the Department of Cross-cultural and RegionalStudies, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and conceived of early in2005, took place a little over a week before the eruption of the “cartoon controversy,”which brought the issue of the relationship between Europe and theso-called “Muslim world” to the fore as never before. From January 20-22,2006, a group of almost thirty Muslim and non-Muslim specialists workingin Islamic studies and on the study of Muslim societies from fifteen countriesin Europe and Southeast Asia gathered in Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Thailand,to discuss the diverse “Voices of Islam” in these two regions. The workshopwas held in southern Thailand, where, in the ethnic Malay-majority borderprovinces, a violent insurgency over the last two years has claimed over 1,000lives and has heightened tensions between the local Muslim population andthe Thai state. Some observers have explained the intensification of the conflictas being due to the infiltration of foreign Islamist militants and the influenceof extremist Islamic discourses of struggle. The workshop focused on two major themes: how events following theSeptember 11 attacks have affected the nature of Islamic studies in Europeand Southeast Asia, and how changes in Islamic studies are impacting uponMuslims and their understanding of Islam in these two regions. While theworkshop presentations were given mainly in English (with a small numberof papers presented in Thai and Malay), a simultaneous interpreting servicewas available for local Thai Muslim (as well as non-Muslim) participants, who attended the workshop in significant numbers.A wide variety of papers were presented. However, if one theme couldsummarize the tone of the three days, it is that 9/11 has engendered a changingparadigm in these regions’ Islamic studies programs, even though manyof the changes may already have been underway prior to the attacks. In thecase of Southeast Asia, governments and the media in the region have attributedthe Muslim extremists’ ideology, at least partly, to the influence of ...

This article examines the interest of Muslims in Australia in pursuing Islamic studies at the university level, exploring the factors that encourage or deter engagement. While Islamic studies programs in Western universities have often been criticized for lacking alignment with the spiritual and intellectual needs of Muslim communities, there is limited empirical research on what prospective students themselves seek from such programs. Drawing on a national survey jointly developed by the Islamic Sciences and Research Academy (ISRA Academy) and Charles Sturt University, this study investigates the motivations, expectations, and perceived barriers of Muslims regarding the field of Islamic studies at the university level. Findings reveal a range of intrinsic motivations, such as spiritual growth, identity development, and the desire to contribute to community knowledge, alongside extrinsic drivers, including professional advancement and accredited qualifications. Key barriers include financial cost, competing work and family commitments, and concerns over program credibility. By highlighting what prospective students want and do not want from Islamic studies programs, this research provides insights for designing courses that are academically rigorous, spiritually authentic, and responsive to the needs of a diverse Muslim population in Australia.
