Abstract

AbstractThis entry explores the meaning and evolution of public diplomacy (PD) in historical and theoretical contexts. It traces the origins of the concept and contemporary definitions and practices. It summarizes the PD of the cold war, explains the theoretical linkage between PD and “soft power,” and the differences between PD and the New Public Diplomacy (NPD). The entry discusses central components including “nation branding” and “international public relations,” and the effects of the digital media, the multidisciplinary nature of the field as well as strengths and weaknesses in existing research and analysis.
