Abstract
This column is the first in a series focused on the current state of public-academic partnerships in America. It reviews the history of such relationships and some of the results of these collaborative efforts. At least 17 states and the District of Columbia have published the results of their programs. Finally, it summarizes the results of a recently repeated survey of departments of psychiatry, initially performed by Faulkner 25 years ago, and concludes that there is a promising future for those interested in initiating or expanding such partnerships.
