Abstract

Ptychaphelenchus eucalypticola gen. nov., sp. nov. is described from the bark of Eucalyptus macrorhynca, at Mount Ainslie, ACT, Australia. The new genus is characterised by small ventrolateral flaps midway between the cloaca and tail tip in adult males, a variable overhanging anterior lip of the vulva in adult females, and three rounded unfringed tubercles on the tail tip. In addition to the generic characteristics, the new species has a stylet 15µm long with large basal swelling, two to three lateral lines, and a short reflexure of the anterior of the gonad. The new genus has characteristics of several genera within Aphelenchoididae as well as novel features, which suggest that the evolutionary relationships within the superfamily may require re-evaluation.
