Abstract

Rickers, I., Metze, E. & Nielsen, T.: Psychological treatment of insomnia. Nordisk Psykologi, 1986, 38 (2), 81–91. Several investigators have recently explored psychological alternatives to medical treatment of insomnia, mostly using relaxational and biofeedback training to reduce ‘nervous tension’. In the present investigation, 19 adult insomniacs were offered a treatment package consisting of 10 sessions of biofeedback training, relaxational training, and psychotherapy. Seventeen patients (84%) were ‘improved’ or ‘cured’ immediately following the treatment and at a 2 month follow-up. Questionnaires indicated a reduction of anxiety in about half of the patients, whereas depression was more markedly reduced in almost all patients. The possible psychological etiology of insomnia is discussed in the light of these and other recent findings.
