Abstract

It has now been 42 years since the late Dr. Yujiro Ikemi founded the Japanese Society of Psychosomatic Medicine (PSM) in 1959. Until his passing in 1999, Dr. Ikemi devoted himself wholly to the development of the Society, bringing in more members year by year (membership today stands at about 3500). The Society received formal recognition as a scientific body in 1979, when it was admitted to the Japanese Association of Medical Sciences. Later, in 1990, the national health insurance system began recognizing 12 different types of psychosomatic treatments, and in 1996, the PSM was formally authorized as a clinical field by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare. This year marks the publication of the 41st volume of “The Japanese Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine” ( Shinshin Igaku), which was first published in 1961. On the international front, the Fourth World Congress of the ICPM was held in Japan in 1977. It will be our great honor to host the 18th World Congress of the ICPM in Japan in 2005.
