Abstract

Acylcarnitines (ACs) are fatty acid oxidation (FAO) intermediates and have been implicated in diet-induced insulin resistance, and elevated AC levels coincide with lower free carnitine and may reflect impaired FAO. Modulating carnitine availability by the administration of carnitine precursor γ-butyrobetaine (γBB) may facilitate FAO, thereby improving insulin sensitivity.
