Abstract

A study on the provision of reproductive health services for adolescents in two Local Government Areas of Nigeria revealed that adolescents utilise public sector health facilities mostly for general health problems. Of all the cases seen in the period under review, 6.1% and 31.8% of cases in the southern and northern study locations respectively could be classified as relating to reproductive health, the gap being mostly accounted for by maternity cases. The perception of the community and the adolescents is that reproductive health problems such as abortions and sexually transmitted diseases are serious problems of adolescents, after the basic needs of potable water, environment, health infrastructure. There is a strong view that the health facilities are poorly prepared, in terms of equipment and other resources to care for the community in general, and that health workers need special orientation for dealing with adolescents.
