Abstract

Wild relatives of Lycopersicon and related Solanum are valuable sources of economic traits. However, some of the wild species of Lycopersicon and Solanum are not sexually compatible with the cultivated species of tomato. The protoplast fusion is the best technique to hybridize such species to make use of wild species. It was Cocking who for the first time isolated protoplast from the tomato root in 1960. Since that time tremendous progress has been made in the protoplast culture, regeneration and fusion.
