Abstract

IntroductionAltered liver function tests can be found with a frequency of 3-5% during pregnancy. Although liver disease during pregnancy is rare, its early identification is important due to possible comorbidities and increased fetal o maternal mortality. EtiologyLiver disease during pregnancy can be classified into two major groups: those directly caused by pregnancy (HELLP syndrome or acute fatty liver disease) and those co-existing with pregnancy (unknown pre-existing liver disease or acute liver disease). The most common causes are viral hepatitis that have a similar course in non-pregnant patients. An alteration of transaminases should be assessed to establish a diagnosis as soon as possible for prognostic implications.
