Abstract
An increasing interest has focused on the patterns for distribution of genetic vaniation in coniferous species, but difficulties in using diploid tissue for electrophoretic analyses have placed obvious limitations on the scale of studies aimed at delineating the genetic population structure of conifers. We describe electrophoretic procedures for analysis of enzyme loci in diploid tissue of Norway spruce (Picea abies K.). Using bud extracts, a total of 25 loci (coding for 12 enzymes) considered usable in population surveys have been identified. All these loci are also expressed in endosperm tissue, but only 15 of them can be scored in needle extracts. The electrophoretic expressions of a total of 65 alleles observed after scoring some 5000 trees from most of the species' European distribution range are also described.
