Abstract

In HVDC grids, the protection system must operate within 10 ms from fault inception so as to prevent the high fault currents from damaging the converters. The derivative or rate of changeofdcsidevoltagehasbeenfoundtobeaquickandreliable indicator of HVDC line faults. In this paper, the performance ofa protection system based on rate of change of voltage and hybrid breakers is tested on a four-terminal CIGRE benchmark HVDC test grid using PSCAD. Additionally, the feasibility of using this protection system to tackle temporary line faults is examined in this paper. Temporary faults are common in overhead lines but often overlooked in HVDC grid protection studies. The enhanced protection system is realised by equipping the hybrid breakers installedinoverheadlineswithauto-reclosingcapability.
