Abstract

Modern prostatic stenting was described by Fabian in 1980 [1]. He first used and tested a stent called the urological spiral, an aptly named metallic spiral inserted into the prostatic urethra. This stainless steel device allowed an obstructed patient to avoid the use of an indwelling catheter. Permanent and temporary stents have been improved significantly over the years, resulting in a wide variety of commercially available products backed by substantial clinical data.
