Abstract
In this paper, the present status of devices, which operate on the basis of quantum mechanical concepts is reviewed and their potential applications are analysed. The analysis comprises the design aspects and a comparison between planar and vertical structures. The planar devices are emphasized in particular and the relevant fabrication techniques and material requirements are discussed. Potential future applications are investigated.
