Abstract
This paper proposes a new geo-environmental zoning method based on the hydrographic basin compartmentalization and codification technique known as the Ottobasin Method [Pfafstetter in Classificacao de Bacias Hidrograficas—Metodologia de Codificacao Rio de Janeiro, RJ. Departamento Nacional de Obras de Saneamento (DNOS), p 19, 1989]. A study was carried out in the Pardo River Basin, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Ottobasins were characterized based on the rock substratum, unconsolidated materials, slope, drainage and landform. The percentage of each analyzed attribute was calculated and compared between the Ottobasins. A GIS-aided analysis was used to assess which Ottobasin should be subjected to further compartmentalization such that an acceptable level of homogeneity was reached. When an adequate level of compartmentalization is attained, the units are sufficiently homogeneous to allow for their use as geo-environmental units, ie as a tool for planning environmental protection/mitigation.
