Abstract

The optical absorption spectra of thin films of Na/sup +/C.Na/sup -/ (s), K/sup +/C.K/sup -/(s) and (presumably) K /sup +/C.Na/sup -/(s) and K/sup +/C.e/sup -/(s) have been measured. (C refers to 2,2,2-cryptand.) The major absorption bands of Na/sup -/, K/sup -/ and e/sup -/ in the solids occur at 650, 850 and 1300 nm respectively. In the case of the Na/sup -/ salt, two additional absorptions occur at higher energies. Preliminary static susceptibility measurements show that Na/sup +/C.Na/sup -/ is diamagnetic, whereas K/sup +/C.e/sup -/ is strongly paramagnetic, even down to 1.6/sup 0/K. Extensive measurements of the thermodynamics and kinetics of complexation of Cs/sup +/ by various crowns and cryptands in a number of solvents have been made by /sup 133/Cs NMR spectroscopy. The results show the formation of both 1-to-1 and 2-to-1 crown complexes and two types of 1-to-1 cryptate complexes, one centro-symmetric (inclusive) and one apparently an exterior (exclusive) complex. Solution studies of alkali metal anions and solvated electrons by NMR and optical spectroscopy have been continued.
