Abstract

Prompt fission neutrons and γ rays are calculated in the statistical Hauser-Feshbach formalism. A Monte Carlo implementation of this theory is applied to excited primary fission fragments as produced in typical low-energy fission reactions. The question of excitation energy sorting at scission between the two fragments is emphasized. Numerical results for the spontaneous fission of 252Cf illustrate our discussion. Finally, selected experiments that would test and constrain fission model predictions are outlined.
