Abstract

Applying a phenomenological theory of flux pinning developed by Kramer, 1 where the ultimate critical current density (J c) of a superconductor is determined by plastic shearing of the flux lattice, approximate upper limits are put on J c for Nb 3Ge, Nb 3Sn, and V 3Ga. At 4.2 K and for magnetic fields H < 100 kG, the J c of V 3Ga is greater than that of either Nb 3Ge or Nb 3Sn and Nb 3Sn has somewhat higher values than Nb 3Ge. Above 200 kG Nb 3Ge has the highest J c due to its having the highest upper critical field and at 14 K or above it probably has the largest J c at all field values.
