Abstract

The Easi-Listener is a portable CD player with six headphone sockets, so splitters are not needed. It plays both CDs and MP3s, has USB functionality and a built in AM/FM radio. It is battery or mains powered so can be used for outdoor learning. Shared listening enables children to engage in a variety of independent activities, from hearing stories together, to learning foreign languages, or even picking up verbal instructions pre-recorded by the teacher. The sound quality of the CD player and headphones are fine for this purpose, and the controls are simple to use. There is a protruding volume dial which isn’t over-sensitive, so there is little danger that children could accidentally turn the sound up too far. However, it is a little wobbly. The adjustable headphones that can be bought to accompany the CD player are comfortable and the sponge ear pieces fit tightly so they cannot easily be pulled off by little hands. The plastic headband also appears robust.
