Abstract

The treatment of patients with loco-regionally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC) is still evolving into the combination of the different approaches including surgical plus radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, it seems that the 5-year survival rate of the patients didn't get improved. Since 70th last century, induction chemotherapy (ICT) has been used for HNSCC patients. It appears that ICT has improved the organ preservation rate and distant control of patients who are diagnosed as HNSCC, but there is still some controversy about improving the survival rate of patients. This article has summarized the development of induction chemotherapy in the treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas, compared the advantages and disadvantages of induction chemotherapy, surgery and chemo-radiation in the treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas, and summarized the induction chemotherapy on tumor local control and distant metastasis, and put forward the problems that induction chemotherapy in head and neck cancer therapy are faced with and the future prospects. Key words: Head and Neck Neoplasms; Neoplasm Metastasis; induction chemotherapy; organ preservation
