Abstract

Keshan disease is an endemic condition which occurs mostly in rural populations, especially in women of child-bearing age and in weanling children. The incidence is affected by natural and social factors. Deficiency in some nutrients or imbalance of trace elements in the soil, water, and grain in endemic areas may be the main cause of the disease. It has been pointed out that selenium deficiency in endemic areas is one of the etiological factors. Moreover, a high manganese content was found in the grain consumed by patients and in their tissues during our study.
