Abstract

Pain medicine physicians may be on the cusp of significant milestones for the practice of Pain Medicine. The American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) and the American Board of Pain Medicine (ABPM) are jointly involved in efforts to obtain both recognition from the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) for Pain Medicine as its own medical specialty and certification from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for residency programs in Pain Medicine. In fact, AAPM and ABPM are seeking the two recognitions to remedy what many practitioners have identified as a key shortcoming in today's Pain Medicine care: the paucity of physicians trained in the full range of pain-related conditions.
