Abstract
The effect of the neonatally administered synthetic progestins norethynodrel norethindrone progesterone and dydrogesterone on sexual behavior and the morphology of genitalia was studied in female golden hamsters. Measures of effect were sexual receptivity a female characteristic; mounting a male characteristic; and morphological characteristics of anogenital distance clitoral bone and cartilage length and ovarian histology. Norethynodrel and norethindrone caused masculinization of genitalia increased masculine sexual behavior in adults and reduced spontaneous and hormone-induced female sexual behavior. Progesterone did not masculinize female hamsters but did diminish hormone-induced feminine behavior. Dydrogesterone had no effect on any of these characteristics.
