Abstract
Since the obedience studies were first published in 1963, faculty and students, as well as reporters and members of the public at large, have been trying to interpret the results and to fathom the mind of an incredible individual, Dr. Stanley Milgram. Whereas most of the chapters in this book address theoretical and research issues, the first three attempt to supply some of the puzzle pieces that are needed to form a clear and cohesive picture of the unique and complex human being behind the obedience experiments. There has been a tendency to depict Dr. Milgram as that cliche, “larger than life,” but although his work was creative and original, he lived in the normal world of academia and family. My goal is to present a balanced view from the perspective of a graduate assistant, doctoral student, and, later, friend.
