Abstract
AbstractSooner or later in their everyday work life, engineers will deal with issues of professional ethics. In the United States, codes of professional ethics are well developed and can be easily followed to avoid problematic situations. Similar codes of professional conduct have been developed in other countries, such as Germany, in the areas of medicine, civil and structural engineering, and architecture over the past few decades. Whether acting as planners, consultants, or specialized experts, civil and structural engineers are obligated to obey the rules of proven professional conduct and modern professional ethics. Their professional practice requires the observation of secured technical knowledge and the obligation for ongoing professional development. This paper provides an overview about professional ethics in general, professional law as it pertains to German engineers, and the relevant aspects of professional ethics in Germany, which will be of interest to engineers practicing there.
