Producing the Past With the Digital: Virtual Reality as Remediation in History Museum's Presentation Practice

ABSTRACT This paper examines contemporary museum practices in light of media and history theory, and understandings of representation. Through a content analysis of in‐depth interviews with museum and IT professionals involved in creating a virtual reality (VR) exhibition piece, we demonstrate how theoretical concepts addressing the mediated nature of representations (remediation, immediacy, hypermediation) can be used to unpack cultural‐history museum work in today's digital world. The analysis shows that our case example exhibition production process relied more on a division of labor between museum and IT experts, and on technology‐driven decision‐making than on joint discussions about on what grounds the different production steps are taken. Finally, we saw the urge to support museum visitors' engagement with the content and experience immediacy as one of the main goals for the whole project, and even something that overrides potential problematic issues about creating the representation itself.

As daily experience demonstrates, contemporary networks (esp The Internet) and computer systems (whether clients or servers) are “Insecure and Unsafe at any speed” (quotation from Ralph Nader, addressing industrial products). Besides many beneficial effects of IT for enterprises, organisations and individual, many incidents have contributed to significant loss and damage. Even pubertarian boys succeed easily in attacking important IT systems and produce significant damage to systems, users and customers. Among several reasons, including basic design of technologies, IT experts do not care sufficiently for the consequences of their design, products and usage. As technical improvements of contemporary IT systems will – for a foreseeable period – only partly help to overcome basic causes of InSecurity, education of IT engineers to safer and more secure design and implementation of their products may help to reduce IT risks. While some professional organisations such have suggested some rules for ethical behaviour of their members, contemporary curricula fail to include Ethics into the education of IT experts esp. Including System and Software Engineering. “Good Practice” becomes even more important with growing dependency of enterprises, organisations, governments and individuals on vulnerable and growingly interconnected IT systems, IT and legal experts must find ways to enforce “good practice ”.

Information technologies as a mean of modernization of tour operating and innovative development of the hotel and restaurant business

The article examines the essence of information systems and technologies in the field of hotel and restaurant industry. The need to integrate software into the work of hotel complexes and restaurants as a basis for the formation and strengthening of competitive advantages for business entities in the rapidly growing market of tourist services is substantiated. Among the information systems and technologies that can be effectively used in the field of organization of the hotel and restaurant business, immersive technologies are defined as a way of full or partial immersion in the virtual world, the use of various types of virtual and mixed reality (augmented reality; visualization technology; virtual reality; mixed reality; 360-photo, video content). Information and communication facilities, components and tools are described, which enable the storage, access, monitoring, manipulation, processing and transmission of information in digital form from one place to another. The expediency of using immersive technologies as a way of full or partial immersion in the virtual world, the use of various types of virtual and mixed reality is defined and substantiated. The specifics of the use of the Customer Relationship Management System (CRM) in the hotel and restaurant business as an extremely effective strategy for business organization, in which customer relations are central to its activities, since customers are the main asset, are characterized. It is proved that an ideal CRM system should include a database on prices and service packages, information on the competitive situation and the current state of the market, a system for planning and monitoring activities, a system for collecting and managing contacts and signed contracts; facilitate the implementation of market segmentation and target audience, planning marketing campaigns, conducting marketing research and evaluating their real results. The prospects for the development of virtual and mixed reality in the hotel and restaurant industry until 2025 are described. The use of information and communication technologies at temporary accommodation enterprises is analysed in Ukraine in general and Ivano-Frankivsk region in particular.

IT system development via project management: A phenomenological and statistical study

Recently researches show upwards of half of all large-scale IT development projects fail to meet expectations for facilitating cognitive work. Besides the Information system development models, the Project Life Cycle methodologies (PLC) have had a significant raise. As a phenomenological and statistical study, this paper discussed the information gathered from IT experts experiences in system development fields as well as IT project management. The goal is finding the reason for failure in IT project form management perspectives. The designed survey, examines the relationship between IT system development and IT project management. This survey, tries to find the facts about IT processes and IT project handling through the live experiences of IT experts. The important note is that instead of asking participants explicitly that what happened to their project as case studies, they have asked about their opinions and experiences in aforementioned field. Therefore, answers can study the participants' real experiences on many real projects instead of the special case study. The survey indicates that most important characteristics of projects management that should be considered in new IT models are quality management and time management. The current IT development models do not make any autonomous authority position for project manager professionals and disarms software project managers in their professional duties. The survey clarified that embedding PERT and PDM in an IT development model facilitate the enable the project managers to have a bright perspective and facilitate the implementation phase. The results indicated the problem reasons and necessities and the combination of project tools with IT development methodology is recommended.

IT Help Desk Service Workflow Relationship with Process Mining

In this paper, the data was initially collected from an IT service department which aimed to handle the computer equipment/server problems and requests of customers whom contacted the company. The IT company has developed a help-desk service in which anyone who requests for any IT service will have to come to this service for help, and the system will automatically generate a ticket for each of the request (i.e., registration number, type of the problem, etc.) and then the system will arrange and assign the work between the a group of IT staff including 5 people in order to address the mentioned customer's problem. The order and sequence of the IT staff to handle the problems is alternatively changed one by one. For example, if the first problem is addressed by IT Expert #1, the second problem is handled by IT Expert #2, and so on until the IT Expert #5, which one cycle is completed and then the forthcoming tasks will be started from IT Expert #1 again. In order to increase the level of the customer satisfaction, the company has set a guideline for each IT Expert in such a way that they need to finish every request (assigned task) within a maximum of 4 hours during the working hours (i.e., 9-12 AM and 1-4 PM). However, the problem that currently the company is facing is that, for some tasks it takes more than 4 hours to handle the customers' requests. In order to discover and investigate what are the main reasons of such delays, and in order to solve the problem, a process discovery Process Mining technique so-called Fuzzy Miner -in terms of both Time Performance and Frequency-Based Analysis metrics- were applied on the collected event logs. Quite surprisingly, the results of the Fuzzy Miner models (based on Time Performance metric) showed that the average time gap between the opening ticket and closing ticket is 4 days, rather than the 4 hours, which is much longer than the targeted guideline. In addition, the results of the Fuzzy Miner models (based on Frequency-Based) could reveal on the sequence and order of the way the activities have been executed and performed while addressing the customers' requests. However, using the Fuzzy Miner techniques did not shed light on the main reasons of the long delays throughout the repairing/customer service process. Accordingly, another type of process mining technique so-called Social Network Miner (based on Handover of Task metric) was used in order to better study the relationships and communicational dependencies amongst the experts. According to the resulting social network graphs, it was understood that out the 5 IT Experts, only 4 of them has really handled most of the workload, while 1 of them performed only 5 tasks per year. By further zooming on this guy, it was realized that not only this guy has performed and accomplished very few number of tasks per year but he has transferred almost all of his assigned tasks to others as well, playing absolutely an inactive and idle role throughout the year. Eventually, the results of the study could help the company to improve the quality of their customer service leading to increased customer satisfaction and improved efficiency.

The articles in this special section focus on virtual and augmented reality applications in science and engineering. There has been an explosive growth in visually augmenting the spaces around us by creating environments where visual, aural, and kinesthetic immersive experiences afforded by virtual and augmented reality (AR) powerfully engage us in a way no other medium can. Virtual reality (VR) recreates the sensory world around us entirely through computer-generated signals of sight, sound, touch (and in some cases smell and taste). AR overlays the computer-generated sensory signals on the real world allowing the user to experience a rich juxtaposition of the virtual and the real worlds simultaneously. Together, these technologies are transforming the way people from all walks of life—scientists, engineers, educators, industrial workers, health care professionals, artists, and everyday people— see and use the information that matters most to them, in an intuitive embodied way. Just as mobile technology has revolutionized how we communicate with each other and with our digital worlds, ubiquitous VR and AR will fundamentally alter how our society creates, inspires, engages, and learns fromthe information-rich and enriched cyberspaces around us. While affordable consumer- quality VR and AR hardware is becoming available, significant work is needed to adopt VR and AR for important and difficult scientific and societal applications.

Use of virtual reality and digital technologies for studying folklore in Ukraine's educational institutions

This article describes the phenomenon of using virtual reality for educational purposes using the synergy of folkloristics and digital technologies as an example. It is not difficult to agree with the opinion that virtual reality today is an ideal learning environment. The concept of using virtual reality technologies for education and science is fully implemented in the virtual reality software and hardware complex for education - VE 3D ieCenter. With the help of this hardware complex, it becomes possible to use virtual reality for studying folklore by pupils or students. The expediency of using the 3D Internet as a means of increasing the interactivity of the educational process is argued. The desire to break beyond the two-dimensional presentation of information has led to the creation of dynamic virtual technologies. Today, new perspectives in the form of 3D information on the Internet are available for teachers in educational and information technologies. Using virtual and augmented reality technologies, students of secondary and higher educational institutions will be able to interact with objects in virtual space or participate in important historical events. Virtual and augmented reality technologies should be applied in the field of education, primarily because the educational system must adapt to complicating processes, models, and theories and students need to operate with a lot of information and new ways of presenting it.\n\nAs an example of the use of virtual reality during practical classes on the study of folklore, the article described the structure of an interactive quest and a seminar

Investigating interactivity around interactive whiteboards: cultural historical perspectives

Interactive whiteboards are becoming increasingly popular in classrooms in Australia and many parts of the world and purportedly have a potential to transform learning. However, the extent of their utility is yet to be realized. Current research on interactive whiteboards suggests that the interactivity component is what fosters learning, yet there is a dearth of research that specifies how a higher level of interactivity is achieved. Research on interactive whiteboards is critiqued for being technologically, rather than pedagogically, focussed and lacks a theoretical underpinning to support data analysis. However, the literature suggests it is a combination of technical and pedagogical interactivity that achieves interactivity, which is claimed to foster learning. As a result, this study investigates how technical and pedagogical interactivity intersect and the implication for teaching and learning. Thus, examining what shape of interactivity exists in each learning episode. Consequently, the current research adopts a Cultural Historical Activity Theory framework in attempt to explain how enhanced interactivity is achieved. In addressing the main hypothesis a qualitative case study methodology is used including the following data collection means: observations, classroom videos, interviews and planning documents. The four cases consist of four primary school teachers and their respective classes whose classrooms are equipped with permanently installed interactive whiteboards. The results indicate that technical interactivity exists within pedagogical interactivity and thereby is most usefully analysed within in a pedagogical context. In contrast to what most of the interactive whiteboard research literature advocate, technical interactivity and pedagogical interactivity in themselves are not sufficient to understand the interactive potential of this technology. There are other sociocultural and sociohistorical elements that need to be considered in order to investigate interactivity around interactive whiteboards. It is proposed in this thesis based on the findings that the more interactivity conducted in class with interactive whiteboards, the greater the learning. Yet, no learning episodes observed in this study led to teaching achieving the highest levels of interactivity as measured by the five stage interactivity framework developed by Sweeney (2008). In addition, there is variability in how interactive whiteboards are utilised during teaching and learning. Some teachers used IWBs only as a presentational technology while others used them to enhance learners’ interaction to achieve pedagogical actions. However, based on the findings of this research there are other elements that are related to achieving interactivity that are informed by Cultural Historical Activity Theory. Therefore, based on the findings, a new conceptualisation of interactivity is proposed and includes seven elements that impact the level of interactivity in learning episodes: teacher, learners, learning goals, tools, rules, roles (Division of Labour) and community. This framework is explained as part of the discussion. This study concludes that Cultural Historical Activity Theory approach is useful in understanding the potential of classroom technology, specifically for interactive whiteboards. Further research is needed to extrapolate this conceptualisation and the intensity of interactivity that does and does not foster learning.

Research on the Application of Oral History in Site Museums

This paper first summarizes the development of oral history in museums and analyses the main factors effecting oral history applied to museums. Second, it discusses the importance of site museums carrying out oral history research work, and explores the ways combing oral history with the work of site museums. Finally, it points out that the importance attached to the application of oral history holds very important significance on saving historical materials, expanding the resources in the collection of site museums, preserving cultural heritage, promoting the research activities, enriching the form of exhibition and exerting the educational functions of site museums.

The urgency of the research. In recent years, world's airports are actively implementing cloud technologies for collecting, processing and visualizing geospatial data: laser and lidar scanning, integration of BIM / GIS models, the use of artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality technologies, digital duplicates and «smart» cities. For Ukraine, which is actively following the path of digitalization and implementation of modern geographic information technologies in many areas of ac-tivity, the development of new methods and approaches for administrative and economic management of airport complexes is a relevant and promising area. Target settings.This study examines the possibilities of modern geographic information and cloud technologies and pro-spects for their use for administrative and economic management of an airport. The study is related to the implementation of the State Target Program for Airport Development until 2023 and the Aviation Transport Strategy of Ukraine until 2030, which aims to develop the aviation industry in Ukraine, bringing airport infrastructure to the requirements of the European Union. The Law of Ukraine «On the National Infrastructure of Geospatial Data» and «Consolidated Concept of VIM Implementation in Ukraine» has a great influence on the formation of geospatial data of airports.Actual scientific researches and issues analysis. The paper analyzes and summarizes publications on methods of obtain-ing geospatial data, implementation of geographic information technologies, virtual, augmented and mixed reality technolo-gies, artificial intelligence and the concept of «smart» city for administrative and economic management of airports.Uninvestigated parts of general matters defining. Analysis of recent research and publications has shown that the pro-spects for the introduction of geographic information technology for administrative and economic asset management of Ukrain-ian airports need further research, as these issues are very important and relevant, given the rapid growth of digital society, environment and infrastructure.The research objective. The purpose of this study is to analyze the possibilities and prospects for the introduction of modern technologies for processing and visualization of geospatial data for administrative and economic management of the airport and the development of a conceptual model. The task of the research is to analyze the methods of obtaining geospatial data of the airport, the use of geographic information systems in airports, artificial intelligence technologies, virtual, aug-mented and mixed reality, the Internet of Things, digital duplicates, implementation of the concept of «smart» city, etc.The statement of basic materials. Geospatial data is created digitally using modern information and cloud technologies that offer a wide range of equipment, software, methods and technologies for working with geospatial information. Every year, new technologies that are used in the administrative and economic management of airports appear: cloud data acquisition methods, geographic information systems, artificial intelligence technologies, virtual reality, the Internet of Things, digital counterparts, «smart» cities, and more. Successful integration and use of existing capabilities for the collection, storage, pro-cessing and visualization of geospatial data of airports will ensure their effective management and economic growth.Conclusions. Based on the analysis of the possibilities of using virtual, augmented and mixed reality technologies, artifi-cial intelligence, digital duplicates and the concept of «smart» cities in airports,a conceptual model of prospects for using geospatial data of the airport to address administrative and economic management of the property complex was developed.

Elena Gonzales's Exhibitions for Social Justice is a valuable handbook on museums that mount exhibitions explicitly engaged with social justice. Not intending to rationalize the need for this kind of work, Gonzales instead seeks to provide support and evidence-based examples for people working in this field. By drawing a bit on neuroscience, Gonzales focuses on how best to engage viewers; what leaves the most lasting impression with them; and how that can lead to an array of impact and actions over time. Although the book was published in 2019, it remains as relevant as ever, as museums and their employees have grappled with their content, collections, and in some cases their very existence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gonzales presents an optimistic take on the importance of museums, arguing that socially engaged work is both doable and meaningful. A range of scholars and readers may find Gonzales's work compelling. The book is directed at people who study or work in museums, with worksheets and checklists at the back of the book. The introduction offers a useful engagement with literature in the field, but overall, the book is accessible and readable to practitioners with a range of backgrounds and training. It is also valuable to public historians and to historians who want to think about how the narratives they craft are received by broad audiences. That said, there is not much specific to New York history or institutions—other than a brief mention of the early iteration of the Museum of Chinese in America—as a deliberate choice on the author's part. Gonzales focuses on inland and international institutions, with Chicago museums (art museums, history museums, zoos, and aquariums) at the heart of the book. Still, the case studies, of which there are a lot, both speak to, and transcend, place and allow Gonzales to make the larger points that animate her work. Chapter 1, "From Empathy to Solidarity," introduces foundational terminology for the book. As someone who has written about solidarity and social movements, I was fascinated to see this term being used in the museum context. Gonzales argues that before we reach solidarity between museum staff and visitors, we must work to propagate empathy in museums. To do that, we must challenge "groupness"—through bringing in those historically considered outsiders to museums or to a particular museum's community—and engage in hospitality. Hospitality initially sounded like a for-profit consumer model, but the example Gonzales gives, of the historic house museum Hull-House serving tea to visitors in what [End Page 408] was activist and Hull-House founder Jane Addams's bedroom, makes a powerful case for the application of this concept (30). The crux of the first chapter shows how exhibition content that emphasizes individual narratives can engender empathy. Gonzales gives several examples, but dwells on the children's exhibition at the Verzetsmuseum Amsterdam, dedicated to Dutch resistance to Nazi occupation during World War II. Gonzales discusses Holocaust museums throughout the book with admirable nuance, and here shows how the exhibition provides glimpses into Dutch experiences by physically building house-like structures for four people who were children during the war. She moves toward solidarity using her own experience as a curator on the show Roots, Resistance, and Recognition: Who Are We Now? (2006) at the National Museum of Mexican Art, which explored Mexican and African Americans solidarity in the United States and Mexico and created an institutional priority to extend solidarity to African American museum goers. She also shows how solidarity can function between institutions themselves, through networks such as the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, which left me curious for more examples of employee and institutional solidarity and how that can shape content. The second chapter argues that physical experiences, in addition to "resonant content," imparts visitors with lasting memories of their museum visits (58). Virtual and Augmented Reality and People Selection: a systematic analysis review.

In our daily routine we have some APP to help us in some activities that in the past people used to resolve them manually. Organizations are increasing its presence in a digital world too with more people working in virtual workplaces everywhere, so it is urge to improve some changes in the actual paradigm of the work environment and introduce the Virtual Reality as a tool to increase results and decrease precious time used to produce more. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality applied at the Human Resources processes should help to create a virtual environment to replicate the company activity in order to achieve this goal. With this revision the author pretends to map all papers about Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality in Human Resources for People Selection in order to identify the main possibilities of this tool to improve and develop new products and more accurate studies for the Human Resources Management.

A culture and power perspective on the management of health information technology in hospitals.

The three traditionally dominating professional hospital cultures - physicians, nurses and management - are challenged by the increasing use of health information technology (HIT) in health care. A fourth group of actors, the IT-professionals has become an exceedingly powerful player challenging the boundaries of the traditional hospital cultures. The hospital cultures are being redefined by and are redefining the technologies as well as the divisions of labour between the professional groups. The IT-professionals have become central actors in this and thereby they constitute a fourth powerful professional culture in the hospitals. This study draws out the phenomenon of IT-professionals as a fourth culture through a qualitative case study of both the IT-department and clinical and managerial hospital practices. The study finds evidence of how the IT-professionals and the IT-departments play a central part in the development of hospital practices constituting them as an influential culture and player in the hospitals. The tendency to see IT as merely infrastructure is hereby challenged and the conclusions demand further research into how to consider IT strategically in the hospitals, possibly pointing towards further user involvement in IT management.

Confirmation Biases in the Financial Analysis of IT Investments

This paper focuses on the optimistic and confirmation biases of experts with respect to major IT investments and their interaction with financial analysts’ competencies in finance and information technology. We used an experimental design that involved asking subjects to predict the financial market’s reaction to major IT investment announcements. Drawing on the literature on optimistic biases, we showed that IT and financial expertise lead to different forecasting patterns. We found that financially competent participants are more subject to confirmatory biases and have a tendency to hold on to a currently favored hypothesis throughout their analysis. IT expertise, though, mitigates the analyst’s confirmatory bias, so that dual expertise leads to less optimistic biases.
