This essay aims to propose a revision of Dionýz Ďurisin's concept of Interliterary Community and Pierre Bourdieu's concept of Field, in order to explain the possibilities of an inner comparative frame in Catalonia, which may be very interesting to the contemporary idea of European literature. The frame reflection by Ďurisin, subject to a thorough review, may be a good framework to understand the place of Catalan literary tradition in European literature in the twentieth century, and even more clearly in the last thirty years. But in this revision it's necessary to consider that interliterariness is deeply conditioned by tension between political, intellectual and literary fields. Catalonia can be conceived as a community with a double interliterary process: on the one hand, by belonging to the Iberian interliterary community—which differs from others by its definition of conflict—, but on the other hand in an inner relationship with literatures written in Spanish in Catalonia—by Catalans but also American...

Overcoming Arlie Hochschild's concepts of the ‘real’ and ‘false’ self by drawing on Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus

  • Michelle Addison

This article theoretically discusses Arlie Hochschild's (1983, 1998) concept of the ‘real’ and ‘false’ self (1983: 194) and how this holds together her model about how it is we manage our emotions. Hochschild draws on ideas about surface acting, deep acting and authenticity to support her theory of emotion management. In this discussion I argue that these ideas undermine the clarity of the theoretical model Hochschild tries to develop to explain emotion management. The first aim here is to demonstrate that this concept of the real and false self acts as an unnecessary conceptual linchpin making Hochschild's ideas about emotion management opaque. The second aim in this article is to theoretically engage with Pierre Bourdieu's (1984, 1990) concept of habitus as a way of overcoming Hochschild's idea of the real and false self.

Community Tolerance, Habitus, and Early Childhood Education in Schools: A Phenomenological Approach
  • Dec 17, 2024

  • Muammar Qadafi + 2 more

Purpose – This study examines how the tolerant culture of the Senggarang community, rooted in its traditions and values, influences religious tolerance education in early primary education in Tanjungpinang City, Indonesia, by utilizing Bourdieu’s theory of habitus and cultural capital to clarify the impact of cultural practices in multicultural communities on early childhood education oriented towards tolerance. Design/methods/approach – This study employs a qualitative phenomenological approach, utilizing direct observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis to explore the influence of cultural practices on tolerance education. Field research engaged diverse informants from Senggarang, including elementary school teachers from early elementary education, local community members, and officials familiar with the area's historical and social dynamics, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the community's tolerance-related practices. Findings – The findings reveal that the tolerant cultural practices in Senggarang, deeply rooted in historical and social contexts, significantly influence tolerance education among students. Children aged 6–7 years in early primary education adopt tolerance as part of the behaviors they learn through communal activities such as interfaith holiday celebrations and support for religious events. Cultural values that promote interfaith respect, evident in traditional interactions and mutual cooperation (gotong royong), are internalized by children through family and community engagement. These practices align with Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of habitus and cultural capital, demonstrating how inherited cultural norms and daily practices shape children's dispositions toward tolerance. Educators and the school environment further reinforce these practices by embedding tolerance education through routines and collaborative activities among diverse students. Research implications/limitations – This study provides valuable insights into how community culture influences school-based tolerance education. However, its findings may be less applicable to areas with different social and historical contexts. Future research could further examine the role of cultural capital and habitus in multicultural education contexts across various regions in Indonesia. Practical implications – The study highlights the importance of incorporating local cultural values into education to foster early tolerance, offering a model for using cultural practices as teaching tools in diverse communities. Originality/value – This study highlights how community culture and Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus and cultural capital enrich our understanding of tolerance education in first-grade primary school students (ages 6–7), encouraging further exploration of local cultural values to shape inclusive educational practices in multicultural societies. DAPUR, MAKANAN, DAN RESISTENSI PEREMPUAN DALAM CERITA PENDEK KUTUKAN DAPUR KARYA EKA KURNIAWAN

Food and culinary has become a subject that has recently been discussed in the study of literature and popular culture. Food and culinary is not just about the fulfillment of primary needs of human, satisfy hunger and thirst, but also deals with social practices, lifestyle, identity, and even ideology. This paper will discuss food and culinary in relation to women's resistance in Eka Kurniawan’s short story entitled Kutukan Dapur (Curse of the Kitchen ). This short story tells the character Maharani who learned a lot about food, culinary, and power relations after visiting a museum. The method used is a structural study of narratology that is deepened with Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of field, power struggle, and capital. the reading of the structure of the text shows that there are two parallel narratives representing the present time and the past. The present time tells the story of Maharani who is trapped in the marriage life that is holding her back, while the past presents the story of Diah Ayu who is intelligent and admired for her cooking skills and rebellion. The results of the analysis show that through focalisation of Maharani, the kitchen as a domestic space that is identical to the limitations of the women’s world, can turn into a field for women's resistance to reach power.

  • Renato Francisco Rodrigues Marques + 2 more

This study aimed to investigate and define interaction ways and social disputes in Brazilian Paralympic movement, relative the procedures for classification of athletes, based on Pierre Bourdieu's concepts. The methodology was based on semi-structured interviews with 4 athletes (physical or visual disabilities, practitioners of different sports - swimming, goalball, rugby and wheelchair basketball) and 4 administrators (2 active in technical functions and 2 in administrative functions at the Brazilian Paralympic Committee). The data analysis was based on the Collective Subject Discourse method and its methodological tools (keyword phrases; central ideas; anchors; tools of discourse analysis). Results stand out as: classification protocols, as well as the performance and training of new classifiers represent social tensions in this area; classifiers have an important symbolic power in the sub-area; Other agents, like coaches and athletes, have reduced chances of ascent due the unfavorable social conditions.

This paper takes the delineation of the life, culture and religious beliefs of the fishermen in Hong-Ji Liao's literary text, The Fishermen, as an illustration of the unique characteristics of Taiwan's fishery culture. Roland Barthes' concept of the semiotic system, Henri Lefebvre's space theory, Pierre Bourdieu's concept of the habitus and Victor Turner's theory of the ritual process will be applied in the discussion on the influences shaping the fishermen's viewpoint towards life, death, religious beliefs and daily practices. The unusual work environment and the small, individual business model adopted by the fishermen in Taiwan's inshore fishery help create the work ethics and distinctive character of the strong close trust and cooperation among the fishermen. While such kind of fishery culture not only influences and molds the fishermen's particular concepts of life and death, it also contributes to their unique religious belief that worshiping and serving both the divine deities and the lower spirits which govern the sea and threaten the fishermen's lives and interests is a necessary part of daily ritual.

Broken Compass: A Screenplay Exploring Economic Inequality in Indonesia’s Education System
  • Mar 9, 2023

  • Maria Inosensia Laymonita + 1 more

Good quality education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their economic status. Unfortunately, often better education in Indonesia comes with a heavy price tag that eliminates working class people from accessing it. This thesis attempts to find out why the working class people are economically discriminated and how they face the discrimination. Using screenplay and young adult dystopian genre, this thesis tries to show the side effects of said economic inequality if taken to the extreme. With Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of school as cultural reproduction, the working class students, including the protagonist Thalia, are discriminated against because they are seen as threats to their resources. To reciprocate, Thalia challenges the system, which sparks a rebellion inside the school. The worldbuilding aspect of the genre is based on Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of social space, capitals, and agency. Thalia from the working class utilizes her agency to face the discrimination.

A homossexualidade feminina no campo da saúde: da invisibilidade à violência
  • Dec 1, 2011
  • Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva
  • Rita De Cássia Valadão + 1 more

Pierre Bourdieu's thought has become an alternative to analyzing the battles waged by the author in the process of ideas, writing, to publication. This reason becomes the basis and consideration that literary studies can enter many domains, not only in literary works but also in authors, society and publishing. Pierre Bourdieu offers the concepts of habitus, capital, realm, and practice. The description method and application method are used to understand Pierre Bourdieu's concept of thought and application to continue the literary work. The result was that Lena Simanjuntak fought in her OBPdPD so she could do shows from 2013 to 2017. Keywords: battle, Perre Bourdiau, Literature, Writer

FINLAND-SWEDISH LITERATURE IN THE CZECH FIELD OF LITERARY PRODUCTION
  • Apr 30, 2019
  • Jan Dlask

This contribution, theoretically and methodologically inspired by Pierre Bourdieu's concept of a literary field, analyses the case of Finland-Swedish literature translations into Czech. This literature is viewed as Swedish-language minority literature in Finland after 1900. The field of literary production is small, but nevertheless represents a varied Finland-Swedish 'segment' in the Czech field. As such it constitutes a certain publishing field, having two polarities (commercial/intellectual; young/old) and being entered into by publishers and translators who select writers and books from a certain space of possibles. Print runs of the published books and the distribution of publishing grants are explored with a view to the sociological character of the research. The analysis is divided into sections according to genres and their presupposed place in the field. It is found that while the mechanisms in the Czech publishing field of Finland-Swedish literature are fragmentary (many different authors, works, translators and publishers), the Bourdieusian approach is a productive framework through which to view the division between the intellectual and commercial poles. The position of Finland-Swedish modernist poetry and prose is – Edith Sodergran, Bo Carpelan and Hagar Olsson, published by Prace and Odeon publishers – is especially significant on the intellectual pole, as well as the position of their advocates within the Czech field (e.g. Josef B. Michl). Short stories, extracts and essays, often belonging to the Finland-Swedish classics (e.g. Christer Kihlman, Henrik Tikkanen), were mainly published in cultural reviews. Finland-Swedish prose is the most varied category, encompassing a broad spectrum of authors and works. Finland-Swedish drama is represented by Bo Ahlfors and the translator of his works Frantisek Frohlich, while commercially successful literature is represented by Sally Salminen's books, published by A. Neubert and Tove Jansson's Moomins. Some of them were translated from Swedish by Libor Stukavec and published by Albatros, others were translated from English and published by Argo.

Trading capitals? Bourdieu, land and water in rural Uzbekistan
  • Jul 1, 2013
  • Journal of Environmental Planning and Management
  • Michael Eichholz + 3 more

In this paper, we use Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of capitals and fields in the context of a transitional rural economy. We investigate ways to adopt these concepts for the study of land governance, in an attempt to gain new insights in post-socialist transition. By means of an in-depth study of land and water reform in two Uzbek villages, we reveal the intimate connections between access to water and access to land in the Uzbek rural economy, as well as the wide variety of strategies used by farmers to secure access to these resources. It is argued that the increased importance of the political field, in combination with its increased volatility and the dismantling of Soviet local governance, led to opacity in the conversion rates of capitals, to a bet on land as safe haven, and an ambiguous status of money.

The Inverted Conquest: The Myth of Modernity and the Transatlantic Onset of Modernism (review)
  • Jun 1, 2011
  • Hispanic Review
  • Gerard Aching

MEJIAS-LOPEZ, ALEJANDRO. The Inverted Conquest: The Myth of Modernity and the Transatlantic Onset of Modernism. Nashville, TN: Vanderbilt UP, 2009. 248 pp.Drawing from abundant research, especially in the archives, The Inverted Conquest describes and interrogates how Spanish American modernismo became a literary phenomenon swept through artistic and intellectual circles in Spain to establish itself by 1900 as the first literary current from Europe's former American colonies to assert its dominance in the metropolis. Modernismo has been consecrated as such, to the extent it has become commonplace, with respect to prosody in the Spanish-speaking world, to speak of a before and after Ruben Dario, the phenomenon's most acclaimed figure. With Dario visibly at the lead, the modernistas revolutionized Spanish poetic meter and shook the former metropolis's literary world with the currency of their knowledge of European (mostly French) cultural objects and literary and artistic tendencies; their taste for cosmopolitan travel, lifestyles, and poses; the unabashed eroticism of some of their works for the times; and their obvious delight in art for art's sake. Given the consensus on modernismo^ impact in Spanish and Spanish American letters, why might it now be worthwhile to return to the heat of the debate about this literary phenomenon, when its influence was beginning to demand attention in literary and intellectual circles in Spain? For a start, Alejandro Mejias-Lopez's detailed account of this impact and the controversies its poets and writers ignited suggests despite modernismos canonical status there remains unfinished business for its literary historians and critics: namely, the need to counter the persistent othering of modernismo in European, Anglo-American, and even some Spanish American theorizations of modernisms and modernity. Professor Mejias-Lopez goes so far as to claim the marginalization oi modernismo appears to be a precondition for such theorizations in order to establish that indeed modernismo is not modernism (2). In light of burgeoning research over the last fifteen years takes the Atlantic world as an analytical framework and the turn in European and US modernist studies over the last decade toward examining the field in a global context, Mejias-Lopez does well to take advantage of these paradigm shifts in several disciplines to situate the modernistas. Instead of rigidly hierarchical structures and relations of power, the new transatlanticism affords concepts amenable to poststructural and postcolonial theorizations, such as circuits, ebbs and flows, traces, displacements, and deterritorializations. Hence, through frequent though mindful culling of Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of literary field, literary revolution, and symbolic capital, The Inverted Conquest elucidates complex networks of transatlantic correspondence, readership, and critical practices, and renews the way in which modernista challenges to the authority of the Spanish literary field might be articulated. But the book's conquest motif does not end here.Mejias-Lopez's study consistently tackles what he terms Europe's of modernity, is, the common supposition this continent had enjoyed homogeneous, evenly distributed, and equally powerful processes of modernization during the nineteenth century. Exploring the relationship between this myth and the marginalization of Spanish American modernismo, the book analyzes latenineteenth- century notions of modernization on both sides of the Atlantic by juxtaposing, in one among several convincing examples, Latin America's early adoption of republicanism and, with the exception of France, Europe's enduring monarchies. Furthermore, Mejias-Lopez's focus on the uniqueness of Spain's geopolitical and socioeconomic situation - one subject to economic and artistic challenges from some of its former colonies and to marginalization from its European neighbors to the north - not only helps to debunk myths of modernity on both sides of the Atlantic but also complicates both Eurocentric and postcolonial critical approaches to modernismo. …
