This year's conference continues its tradition of being the premier forum for presentation of research work and experience reports on communication and information, information science, design studies, cognitive and computer science, etc. Furthermore, ACM SIGDOC aims to continue expanding its creative interactions and energies in Europe, hosting this year's conference in Pisa, Italy, at the Grand Hotel Continental. The mission of the conference is to share novel ideas, theories, model and application environments in the areas of Information Design and Information Architecture, Technical Documentation, Open Source, Collaborative Writing Processes, Usability, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI/CHI), Computer-Mediated Communication, Learning Systems/Environments, Legal and Ethical Dimensions of Communication, Serious Games and Virtual Worlds, etc. and identify new directions for future research and development. ACM SIGDOC '11 gives researchers and practitioners a unique opportunity to share their perspectives with others interested in the various aspects of communication design and technology. The call for papers attracted 75 submissions from Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The program committee accepted 36 as full papers and 9 as short papers, and 5 posters. In addition, the program includes a Workshop on Augmenting the learning experience with virtual simulation systems and two prestigious keynote speakers. We hope that these proceedings will serve as a valuable reference for all the participants.
