Abstract

It has been a privilege to serve as President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America this year, and the attendance of many of our colleagues from abroad at this annual meeting gives me great pleasure. I presume this honor was given to me because of my contribution to the study of infectious diseases, and with the assumption that I have perspectives useful in furthering the interests of our Society. I am grateful to you for this recognition and opportunity. My predecessors have discussed scientific subjects in which they have had deep interest. I was tempted to do the same and avoid the labor and effort needed to discuss other topics. Evaluation of my past and present activities, however, revealed that the emphasis of my involvement was in the development of young persons, and in councils, committees, and commissions that fostered work in infectious diseases. For this reason, I decided to share with you my concepts and perspectives about the mission, and the forces, constraints, and pressures influencing the present and future study of infectious diseases. The responses we should make individually and collectively to serve our objectives can then be appropriately determined.
