Abstract

According to the Emergency Severity Index (ESI),1 patients who need 2 or more resources are classified acuity 3 when a high-risk situation is not present. An acuity rating of 3 is assigned to more than 50% of ED visits. Within the cohort of acuity 3 patients are chief complaints and clinical determinations that reflect a wide variation of clinical presentations. Factors that complicate prioritization of the patient with an ESI acuity 3 include the following: consideration of differential diagnosis related to presenting complaints, bias associated with patients who present often to the emergency department as “frequent flyers,” and current best practices for common ED visit complaints.
