Abstract

The paper indicates the development of legislative actions and plans in the field of medical devices in Europe and the USA. Major principles and their adequacy for medical device legislation are discussed, such as premarket clearance, compulsory standardisation, registration and inspection of the manufacturer, the obligation to notify and recall hazardous devices etc. The harmonisation plans within the EEC as well as legal regulations and tendencies of some European countries are mentioned.
