Abstract

Measurements in situ were made of oxygen exchange and 14C fixation in calcareous sediments off the coast of Florida, USA, and at various sites in the Caribbean Sea at depths to 60 m. Sediment samples were analyzed for total organic carbon, nitrogen and photosynthetic pigments. In some cases, measurements were made of the pH of sediment interstitial water and its concentration of total CO2. In the Caribbean Sea, routine hydrological sampiing was undertaken and in situ plankton productivity determined.
