Abstract

Evidence on the pricing of initial public offerings is presented for Germany. A data set of 92 going publics over the years 1961–1987 is analyzed. On average, the initial return from the offer price to the first day of trading, adjusted for market movements, is more than 15° o. Tests of several hypotheses indicate that underpricing is related to ex-ante uncertainty about the value of the shares.
