Abstract

Most of us are aware that the electric power industry is being transformed in several significant ways. Natural gas is supplanting coal as the leading utility choice for generation. Transmission lines are creating new grid linkages, including links to utility‐scale renewable generation facilities. Finally, in certain parts of the country, mass‐market customers are investing heavily in distributed generation, chiefly photovoltaic solar power, usually via rooftop solar panels. Each development has its issues, but rooftop solar seems to generate controversy that spills into the popular press.
