Abstract

Direct carburizing can reduce source gas in comparison with the gas carburizing using the endothermic gas generator. However, this method has been commonly used in the surface heat treatment because the direct carburizing method has many problems, for example, the difficulty of atmosphere control and the soot generation. Soot is generated from hydrocarbon gases. If soot deposition is occurred on the sensor that controls the carbon potential, the sensor can’t work correctly. Thus, the prevention of soot generation is important. In this study, the prevention of soot generation is performed by the injection of water vapor into carburizing atmosphere. In conclusion, the prevention of soot generation is succeeded in direct carburizing. The amount of soot generation decreased with increasing the injection rate of water vapor.
