Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites and associated risk factors in slaughtered trade dromedary camels in Kano, Northern Nigeria

Parasites are important in animal health because of the various significant challenge they pose to animal health and well-being. The prevalence and distribution of gastrointestinal parasitic infections among trade dromedary camels in Kano, a major hub for camel trade in Northern Nigeria, are not well documented. This study contributes to the development of effective parasite control strategies, improving camel health and productivity. This study investigated the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites and associated risk factors in camels slaughtered at the Kano Main Abattoir in Nigeria. Using a cross-sectional study design, a total of 115 camels were examined for gastrointestinal parasites using faecal flotation and sedimentation techniques. The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was 84.4%, with 76.29% of infected camels having mixed parasite infections. Seven different parasite types were identified, belonging to nematodes (Strongyle spp., Trichuris spp., Strongyloides spp.), cestodes (Anoplocephala spp.), trematodes (Fasciola spp.), and coccidia (Eimeria cameli, E. rajasthani). The most prevalent parasites were Strongyle spp. (12.37%) and Trichuris spp. (7.22%). Risk factors significantly associated with parasite prevalence were sex (males 93.3%, females 74.5%) and faecal consistency (pasty 100%, pelleted 80.9%). Body condition score and presence of mucus in faeces did not show a significant association. The mean faecal egg count was 162.7 eggs per gram, with 92.63% of infected camels having mild infections. This study highlights the high burden of gastrointestinal parasites in camels in this region and the need for improved parasite control strategies.

Prevalence of gastrointestinal and blood parasites in horses of Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Thailand.

The global prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) and blood parasite infections in horses is a significant concern due to their substantial impact on morbidity, mortality, and economic losses in the horse industry. In Thailand, limited research has been conducted on these parasites in horse populations, and data from southern Thailand are lacking. Consequently, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of GI and blood parasites in horses in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Thailand. In total, 79 fecal and blood samples were collected from horses across 11 farms in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The fecal examination was conducted using simple flotation, formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation, and a modified McMaster technique. Conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to identify blood and strongyle parasites. The influence of sex, age, and body condition score on the prevalence of GI parasites was also analyzed. Six GI parasites were detected: four nematodes (Oxyuris equi, Parascaris equorum, strongyles, and Strongyloides westeri), one trematode (Gastrodiscus aegyptiacus), and one protozoan (Eimeria leuckarti). The overall prevalence of GI parasites was 74.7%, with single strongyle infections accounting for the highest proportion at 50.6%, followed by co-infections of strongyles and G. aegyptiacus at 10.1%. All 11 pooled strongyle samples were positive for cyathostomins and Strongylus vulgaris using conventional PCR with specific primers. Sex was significantly associated with the overall prevalence of GI parasites, whereas both sex and age were significant risk factors for infection by strongyle parasites. Theileria equi was the only blood parasite species detected in the surveyed horses, with a prevalence of 1.3% (n = 1/79). This study is the first to estimate the prevalence of GI and blood parasites in horses from Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Thailand. These findings highlight the importance of implementing control measures against GI parasites and are pivotal for developing effective infection prevention strategies.

Prevalence of Gastrointestinal Parasites of Horses and Donkeys in and around Gondar Town, Ethiopia

A cross sectional study was conducted from October 2010 to June 2011 in and around Gondar town to identify the species and determine prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in donkeys and horses. Gross examination, direct fecal smear, sedimentation and floatation techniques were utilized to identify the eggs and larvae of parasites in feces. A total of 384 horses and donkeys were examined for gastrointestinal parasites. The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was 92.71% (356 from 384) with 80.95% (85 from 105) and 97.13% (271 from 279) in horses and donkeys, respectively. Prevalence of Strongyle, Parascaris equorum, Oxyuris equi, Gastrodiscus aegyptiacus and Gastrophilus intestinalis was 66.67%, 43.8%, 0.95%, 2.86%, and 0.95%, respectively in horses. Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was 87.81%, 42.29%, 4.30%, 5.73%, 1.43%, 3.58% and 0.72% for Strongyles, Parascaris equorum, Oxyuris equi, Fasciola, Tricuris, Gastrodiscus aegyptiacus and Gastrophilus intestinalis in donkeys, respectively. Study on the Prevalance of Gastrointestinal Helminthes Infection in Equines in and around Kombolcha

A cross sectional study was conducted from October 2013 to April 2014 in and around Kombolcha town to estimate the prevalence of gastro intestinal tract helminthes infection and to identify the common GIT helminthes parasites of equines. Gross examination, direct fecal smear, sedimentation and floatation techniques were utilized to identify the eggs of parasites in feces. A total of 384 horses, mules and donkeys were examined for gastrointestinal parasites. The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was 73.2% (281 from 384) with 57.0% (73 from 128), 82.5% (160 from 194) and 77.4% (48 from 62) in horses, donkeys and mules respectively. Prevalence of Strongyle spp, Parascaris equorum, Oxyuris equi and Anoplocephala spp was 44.5%, 3.1%, 2.3%, and 3.1% respectively in horses. Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was 63.4%, 8.6%, 2.1% and 3.1% for Strongyle spp, Parascaris equorum, Oxyuris equi and Anoplocephala spp in donkeys, respectively and the prevalence of GIT parasites was 48.4%, 12.9%, 3.2% and 6.5% for Strongyle spp, Parascaris equorum, Oxyuris equi and Anoplocephala spp in mules respectively. There was statistically significant difference between species, age, and body condition and among different management systems in prevalence of equine gastrointestinal parasites (p<0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference in prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites based on sex. In conclusion, the present study revealed higher prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in equines. Therefore, regular deworming, improvement of housing and feeding management were recommended.

Prevalence and Diversity of Gastrointestinal Parasites in Native and Blended Goats from Mpwapwa District, Tanzania

Gastrointestinal parasites (GIP) in goats pose a global challenge, resulting in significant negative impacts that affect health, productivity, and economic value. These parasites include nematodes, cestodes, and protozoa. The current study aimed to determine the prevalence and diversity of gastrointestinal parasites in goats found in Mpwapwa District. A cross-sectional study was carried out in Mpwapwa District from February to April 2025. A total of 200 faecal samples were obtained and analysed to detect gastrointestinal parasites. Additionally, a structured questionnaire was used to gather information from farmers on factors that might be linked to gastrointestinal parasitic infestations. The findings revealed a wide diversity of GIP in the study area, with a total of 11 GIP genera identified. The overall prevalence of GIP in goats was 61.5%. Breed-wise, Blended goats had a significantly (p&amp;lt;0.05) higher rate of gastrointestinal parasite infestation (71.3%) compared to Gogo goats (52.8%). Based on age, the prevalence was 65.6% in young animals and 59.6% in adults (p&amp;gt;0.05). Additionally, the physiological status of animals was significantly (p&amp;lt;0.05) associated with the prevalence of GIP. The body condition score did not influence parasitic prevalence (p&amp;gt;0.05). The most prevalent parasite was &amp;lt;i&amp;gt;Trichostrongylus&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt; spp. At 42.3%, followed &amp;lt;i&amp;gt;by Haemonchus&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt; and &amp;lt;i&amp;gt;Eimeria&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt; spp., with prevalence of 18.2% and 12.4%, respectively. The current study revealed a high prevalence of parasites, indicating that GIP are a major challenge in goat production in the study area. Therefore, the application of proper control measures is recommended for the welfare of the goat production, but also addresses parasites that have zoonotic significance.

Prevalence and seasonal variation of gastrointestinal parasites among captive Northern Pig-tailed Macaque Macaca leonina (Mammalia: Primates: Cercopithecidae)

A study on the prevalence and seasonal variations of gastrointestinal parasites of 12 captive Pig-tailed Macaques Macaca leonina housed at Aizawl Zoological Park, Mizoram, India, was conducted. Fresh stool samples were collected on a monthly basis from the study animals was grouped for two seasons—summer (April–June 2017) and monsoon (July–September 2017). Samples were stored in 10% formalin until further processing. Three methods—direct smear, faecal floatation, and faecal sedimentation were used. Two categories of parasites—protozoa and nematodes were recorded. Balantidium coli, a protozoa, Strongyle, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichiuris trichiura, and nematode parasites were recorded in different stages. Out of 71 samples analysed, 63 samples (88.73%) were positive with ova of gastrointestinal parasites. The prevalence of Balantidium coli was highest with 38.23% and 56.75%, followed by Strongyle 35.29% and 37.83% in summer and monsoon season, respectively. A variation on the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was assessed using chi squared tests between monsoon season and summer season. Variation was found to be significant (χ 2=20.569, P˂0.05 and χ 2=10.857, P˂0.05). The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was higher during monsoon season (91.89%) than summer season (85.29%).

Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in communal goats from different agro-ecological zones of South Africa

Aim:A longitudinal study was conducted to assess the epidemiology of common gastrointestinal parasite (GIP) infections affecting goats in South Africa as influenced by agro-ecological zone (AEZ), sampling season, and the age and sex of animals.Materials and Methods:A total of 288 goats (101 male and 187 female) were randomly sampled during winter and summer in areas representing four AEZs (arid: 80; semi-arid: 76; humid: 62; and dry sub-humid: 70) of South Africa. Fecal samples from each animal were collected from the rectum, and the presence of GIP eggs was determined using a modified McMaster technique. A sample was considered positive when a minimum of one GIP egg was detected under the microscope. Fecal cultures were prepared, and infective larvae were collected and identified. The data were analyzed by MiniTab17 (2017) using the FREQ procedure, and the association between the independent factors and the prevalence of various GIPs were evaluated using the Pearson Chi-square test (p<0.05).Results:The overall prevalence of GIP in the present study was 37.1%, with a mean prevalence of 30.0, 26.4, 31.1, 36.6, and 59.6% for Eimeria spp., Trichuris, Strongyloides papillosus, Moniezia spp., and strongyles, respectively. There was a significant (p<0.05) association between the prevalence of strongyles, Trichuris, Moniezia spp., and AEZs, whereas an insignificant (p>0.05) association was observed for the prevalence of Eimeria spp. and S. papillosus. A significant (p<0.05) association between goat age and prevalence of all GIPs was observed, where the prevalence was higher in young goats, followed by adults, and then by suckling goats. The prevalence of various GIPs was similar between male and female goats. The percentage of infection with Eimeria spp., Trichuris, S. papillosus, and strongyle parasitic infections was marginally higher in males than in females, whereas that of the Moniezia spp. was higher in females. A significant (p<0.05) association between the prevalence of Eimeria spp. and sampling season was observed, and there was an insignificant (p>0.05) association between the other GIPs and sampling season. The prevalence of Eimeria spp. infection was higher in winter (34.0%) than in summer (26.0%).Conclusion:AEZs and goat age are the most important risk factors influencing GIP infections in South African communal goats. These epidemiological parameters are important for outlining effective parasite control management systems against these GIPs in goats.

Prevalence of Ecto and Gastrointestinal Parasites of &lt;i&gt;Rattus rattus&lt;/i&gt; in Mazandaran Province, North of Iran

Rodents act as reservoir hosts and are an important potential source for many zoonotic pathogens such as parasites, which pose a public health risk to humans. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the prevalence of parasites among rodents. A total of 118 Rattus rattus were captured in Mazandaran province, north of Iran, using snap live traps. Various samples were collected from feces and each rat was combed with a fine-tooth comb to extricate any ectoparasite. Fecal specimens were examined by direct wet mounting, formalin-ether concentration, modified acid-fast, and trichrome staining methods. The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in the examined rats was 75.4%. Cryptosporidium spp. (30.5%) were the most prevalent protozoan, followed by Giardia spp. (20.3%), Entamoeba muris (13.5%), Trichomonas muris (10.1%), and Spironucleus muris (3.3%). Regarding helminths' eggs, Syphacia obvelata (24.5%), Hymenolepis diminuta (10.1%), and Trichuris muris (9.3%) had the highest prevalence, respectively. Furthermore, 3060 ectoparasites collected from 102 rodents were infested with lice (40% Polyplax spp.), mites (33.3%), and flea (16.1% Xenopsylla cheopis and 10.6% Xenopsylla astia). According to the results of this study, the prevalence of ecto and gastrointestinal parasites in the collected rats in the area being studied was remarkably high. Additionally, Rattus rattus can be considered a potential risk to human health.

Gastrointestinal Nematodes and Protozoa in Small and Large Ruminants from Rural Agro-Climatic Regions of Northern India

Gastrointestinal nematode parasites and gastrointestinal protozoan parasites are considered detrimental to the livestock population and manifest production-limiting effects. Small and large ruminants (cattle, buffalo, goats, and sheep) are important components of the rural economy of northern India. However, the epidemiology of gastrointestinal parasites in this agro-climatic region has not been studied extensively. In this study, the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was determined in 163 animals, including cattle (n = 86), buffalo (n = 11), goats (n = 48), and sheep (n = 18) from 26 sampling sites by copro-parasitological analysis. The prevalence values of 94.47% and 66.87% were recorded for the nematodes and protozoa, respectively. The group-wise prevalence of gastrointestinal nematode parasites was 95.3%, 90.9%, 93.7%, and 94.4% in cattle, buffalo, goats, and sheep, respectively, whereas for gastrointestinal protozoan parasites, the respective values were 70.9%, 54.5%, 60.4%, and 72.2%. Copromicroscopy revealed ten genera of nematodes—Ascaris, Capillaria, Cooperia, Haemonchus, Nematodirus, Oesophagostomum, Ostertagia, Strongyloides, Trichostrongylus, Trichuris, and one protozoan genus—Eimeria. The prevalence of Trichostrongylus spp. was highest in buffaloes, whereas in cattle, Ascaris spp. were predominant. In both goats and sheep, Haemonchus contortus was found to be predominant. The highest prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was recorded in the rainy season. These findings indicate the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in the ruminant population in this region and necessitate the implementation of preventive and control strategies for effective animal health management.

Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in captive mammals at Khon Kaen Zoo, Thailand.

Captive animals are susceptible to parasitic diseases due to the stress and confinement they experience. In addition, they can serve as reservoirs of zoonotic parasites that have the potential to infect humans. To investigate this possibility, we estimated the prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) parasites in captive mammals at Khon Kaen Zoo, Thailand. One hundred and forty-seven individual mammals (37 primates, 43 carnivores, 62 herbivores, and 5 rodents) were examined for parasitic infections by fecal examination daily for 3 consecutive days using the formalin-ethyl acetate concentration technique (FECT) and the agar plate culture method. According to FECT, the overall prevalence of GI parasites was 62.6% (92/147). Within animal groups, the numbers were as follows: 67.6% (25/37) in primates, 23.3% (10/43) in carnivores, 85.5% (53/62) in herbivores, and 80.0% (4/5) in rodents. Using the agar plate culture method, 21.43% (27/126) were positive for Strongyloides spp. and hookworm infections. The GI parasites identified belonged to three categories: protozoa (including Entamoeba histolytica species complex, Entamoeba coli, Giardia spp., coccidia, and ciliated protozoa), trematodes (minute intestinal flukes and rumen flukes), and nematodes (strongyle/hookworm, Strongyloides spp., Ascarididae, and Trichuris spp.). The findings of this study indicate the prevalence of several GI parasites in zoo animals with the potential for transmission to humans, given the animals' close proximity to both visitors and animal caretakers.

This study aims to determine the prevalence and frequency of gastrointestinal parasites in grazing adult cattle from the Caquetá state. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out, through of sampling and coprological analysis on 967 bovines older than 36 months in 99 dual-purpose herds of the nine of the sixteen municipalities that contain the 80% of cattle population of the state. Fecal samples were transported in refrigeration of 4 to 8 °C and were analyzed through the McMaster coprological technique. Data were analyzed through non-parametric statistics using the Kruskal-Wallis test to determine the prevalence of each of the parasite’s genus found, and ANOVA with the Scott-Knott test at 95% level of significance for determining prevalence by the municipality. The prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in cattle sampling was 45.09%, in males and females was of the 51.22 and 44.52% respectively, but the association between sex and prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was not found (p=0.2434). The most frequently observed genus was Eimeria following by Trychostrongylus, those two represent the 93.4% of the gastrointestinal parasites found; the main association of infestation was observed between Eimeria and Trichostrongylus and less extent with Bonostomum, Moniezia, Nematodirus, and Trichuris. The prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in grazing adult cattle in the Caquetá state is moderate. The parasites with most frequency belong to the protozoa as the Eimeria and nematodes of the genus Trichostrongylus.

Prevalence and diversity of gastrointestinal parasites in free-ranging rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in different land gradients of Bangladesh.

Rhesus macaques are considered an important reservoir of different gastrointestinal (GI) zoonotic parasites affecting livestock and humans. Loads of GI parasites in the free-ranging rhesus macaques living in close proximity to communities in Bangladesh are still unknown. To estimate the prevalence and diversity of zoonotic GI parasites in rhesus macaques of Bangladesh, a total of 182 freshly voided fecal samples were collected from macaques living in rural (N = 67), peri-urban (N = 57), urban (N = 28), and Safari park (N = 30) between October 2015 and December 2016. All samples were tested by direct smear, sedimentation, flotation, and the McMaster techniques. A total of fourteen different taxa of GI parasites were detected, revealing an overall prevalence of 54.4% (n = 99; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 46.9-61.8). The prevalence of GI parasites was found to be significantly correlated with the mean parasitic taxa per individual in a group (r = 0.90; p = 0.002). The multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that the overall prevalence of GI parasites in macaques was significantly higher in those inhabiting rural areas (62.69%; odds ratio [OR]: 7.22; p = 0.001) and in macaques with interactions with other animals (60.98%; OR: 5.49; p = 0.005). Our results also indicated that the prevalence of Strongyloides spp. and Balantidium coli infections varied significantly between land gradients. Our results also indicate that macaques frequently visit human settlements for food and are found interacting with domestic animals. In conclusion, the high prevalence of zoonotic GI parasite infection in rhesus macaques found in our study may pose a significant public health risk to communities, particularly in rural areas of Bangladesh. Health promotion to at-risk communities focusing on limiting contact with rhesus macaques is necessary to mitigate potential zoonotic transmission.

Prevalence and Diversity of Ovine Gastrointestinal Parasites in the District Lower Dir

Gastrointestinal parasitism is a key challenge to sheep production globally, These parasites result in weight loss, diarrhea, anemia, and higher production costs. Objectives: To find out the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in ovine of district lower Dir Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Methods: A fecal sample was taken at random from the rectum of sheep (Ovis aries) using gloved fingers. The faecal components were then placed in sterile plastic bottles containing 10% formalin. A total number of 584 faecal samples of sheep were collected and then analyzed for the presence of parasites. Among them, 219 sheep were male, and 365 were female. Results: The Overall prevalence rate was 89.04%. Most commonly, parasites were Haemonchus spp., Strongyloides spp., Trichuris spp., Fasciola hepaticas spp., and Moniezia spp., which were 43.27, 28.57, 15.59, 3.6, and 1.7% prevalences, respectively. Based on sex, there was a significant difference (p&lt;0.05) in the overall incidence of gastrointestinal parasites between male (33.39%) and female (55.65%) sheep. The prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in adult sheep was higher (69.18%) than in young sheep (19.86%). The highest infection was observed in the Balkhi breed (38.7%) and the Damani breed (32.53%) in comparison to the Lokhi breed (18.32%) (p&lt;0.05). In contrast, in the tehsil-wise comparison, the maximum number of gastrointestinal parasites prevalence (17.46%) was recorded in tehsil Samar Bagh, followed by tehsil Munda 15.23%, Lal Qila 13.01%, Balambat 9.1%, and tehsil Khall 8.4%. Conclusions: It was concluded that parasitic spp, sex, age, breed, and different tehsils are vital factors that affect the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites.

Gastrointestinal parasitic infections constitute a major constraint to equine health and productivity, particularly in tropical regions where climatic and environmental conditions favor parasite survival and transmission. In Côte d'Ivoire, epidemiological data regarding gastrointestinal parasites in horses remain limited, especially in urban and peri-urban settings such as the district of Abidjan. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, diversity, and associated risk factors of gastrointestinal parasites affecting horses in the study area. A descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2024 to February 2025 among 277 horses originating from 19 equine facilities, including 8 riding schools and 11 breeding farms, located in the district of Abidjan. Fresh fecal samples were collected and analyzed using four coprological techniques: direct examination, flotation, the simplified Ritchie concentration method, and Ziehl-Neelsen staining. Statistical analyses, including chi-square tests and logistic regression, were performed to identify factors significantly associated with parasitic infections at a significance threshold of p ≤ 0.05. The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was 88.80%, indicating widespread circulation of equine gastrointestinal parasites within the study area. Fifteen parasite species were identified, with predominance of Strongylus spp. (48.37%), Parascaris equorum (40.07%), cyathostomins (Cyathostominae) (30.68%), Fasciola hepatica (29.24%), and Cryptosporidium parvum (28.51%). Nematodes represented the predominant parasitic group. Significant associations were observed between parasitic infections and management-related factors, particularly feeding practices and type of equine activity. Horses from riding schools appeared more exposed to certain parasitic infections compared with horses raised on breeding farms. The high prevalence and diversity of gastrointestinal parasites observed among horses in the district of Abidjan highlight an important equine health concern in Côte d'Ivoire. These findings emphasize the need to strengthen integrated parasite control strategies, including regular parasitological monitoring, improved hygiene and management practices, rational use of anthelmintics to reduce the risk of resistance, and targeted deworming programs. Reinforcing veterinary surveillance and increasing awareness among horse owners and managers could substantially contribute to improving equine health and productivity in the study area.

Prevalence of endoparasites in roe and red deer from Strzałowo Forest Inspectorate (Puszcza Piska) in different study periods and in animals of different ages

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of lungworms and gastrointestinal parasites in wild roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) and red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) from Strzałowo Forest Inspectorate (Puszcza Piska) in different study periods and in animals of different ages. Fecal samples were collected during autumn and winter hunting (2011-2013). A total of 173 fecal samples were analyzed by coproscopic techniques: 47 from roe deer and 126 from red deer. First-stage larvae (L1) of pulmonary nematodes were found in 4 samples from roe deer and in 86 samples from red deer. The prevalence of the Eimeria genus was 19.2 % in roe deer and 25.4 % in red deer. The prevalence of the Moniezia genus in red deer was 1.6 %, whereas no Moniezia eggs were found in roe deer. No fluke eggs were detected in either red deer or roe deer. The prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was 53.2 % in roe deer and 58.7 % in red deer. Coinvasion by endoparasites was detected in 69.8 % of red deer and in 57.4 % of roe deer. There were no significant differences between the prevalence of parasites in wild deer (Cervidae) in different study periods. This may suggest that the prevalence of endoparasites among roe deer and red deer in Strzałowo Forest Inspectorate remains stable.]

ObjectivesThis study was aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of gastrointestinal parasites on schoolchildren at Bochesa Elementary School around Lake Zwai, Ethiopia. Cross-sectional study was conducted on 384 schoolchildren in May 2016. The gastrointestinal parasites were examined with wet mount and formol-ether concentration techniques. Chi-square (χ2) test was used to evaluate the association between categorical variables and infection prevalence. Binary logistic regression on SPSS version 21 was used, values were considered significant when the p-value was less than 0.05.ResultsThe overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was 22.6%. Males, 54 (14.1%) were more infected than females, 32 (8.3%), and 1–4 grade category, 64 (16.7%) were more infected than 5–8 grade category, 22 (5.7%). Age groups of 7–14, 78 (20.3%) were also more infected than > 15, 8 (2.1%); however, the variation was not significant (p > 0.05). In this study, parasitic coinfection was common; however, single gastrointestinal parasites were more dominant. The overall rate of gastrointestinal parasites shows that the environmental conditions where students pass their times are conducive to water-related diseases. Health education on personal and environmental hygiene keeping should be given to schoolchildren and safe wetland playing grounds should be prepared.
