Abstract

Purpose: Neuropathic pain, thought to be due to nerve damage, is considered challenging to manage. The presence of sciatica in low back-related leg pain (LBLP) is often believed to be neuropathic, similarly the prognosis of patients with neuropathic pain is commonly thought to be worse compared to those without. Currently there is a paucity of evidence on the epidemiology of neuropathic pain in this patient population. The aim of this research was to describe the prevalence, characteristics and clinical course of neuropathic LBLP in primary care.
