Abstract

As a bulb turbine unit, in general, is located in the low height dam, the short penstock and tailrace tunnel are provided. There are, however, a few cases of bulb turbine units with a long penstock due to geographical condition. At the load rejection test of bulb turbine with a long penstock, a singular pressure variation has been observed in several times. Hydrographic model tests were carried out to analyze this singular phenomenon. It was clarified from the model tests that air stagnation at the upper part of turbine casing causes the singular variation in pressure. Since the pressure wave propagation velocity is varied during load rejection under the influence of air stagnating condition, such singular pressure variation occurs.
