Preparing Educators to Support SEL: The Foundational Role of Trauma-Informed Training

Abstract

In this perspective article, we explain the crucial importance of incorporating trauma-informed education into academic and professional development training for educators, emphasizing the foundational need to view social and emotional learning (SEL) through a trauma-informed lens. A Trauma-Informed Approach (TIA) serves as a valuable tool, empowering educators to navigate the potential impact of SEL lessons or skill development on their students. It encourages a nuanced consideration of cultural responsiveness and a strengths-based resiliency focus for all students, regardless of traumatic experiences. The compassionate and flexible approach of educators universally employing a TIA has the potential to strengthen SEL implementation, fostering an environment that respects and acknowledges the diverse challenges students may be facing. A TIA as a universal foundation not only meets students where they are, but also creates a platform for their voices to be heard, allowing for an understanding of the unspoken struggles they may face and the behaviors that communicate challenges beyond verbal articulation. Recognizing the paramount importance of integrating TIA into academic and professional development programs ensures that future and practicing educators are equipped with the essential tools for creating inclusive and supportive learning environments, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of SEL initiatives in schools.
