Abstract

Abstract Novel AlN precursors have been prepared by reactions in a LiAlH4-CH3NH2·HCl-(CH3)2NH·HCl system with several nominal CH3NH2·HCl : (CH3)2NH·HCl (M : D) ratios (M : D = 4 : 1, 6 : 1 and 8 : 1). Considerable amounts of precursors were soluble in both tetrahydrofuran and benzene. Soluble precursors consist of polymeric/oligomeric species possessing both [H2AlNMe2] and [HAlNMe] units, and ring-type (H2AlNMe2)3 was also present only if M : D = 4 : 1. The precursors were converted into single-phase AlN with relatively high ceramic yields (up to 58 %) by pyrolysis at 1600 °C under Ar.
