Abstract
Twenty cases of adenocarcinoma of lower rectum were treated by 60Co high dose rate intraluminal radiation(40Gy) combined the conventional external beam radiotherapy (30Gy),then radical surgery were performed within 2 or 3 weeks after completion of radiation therapy. Abdominoperineal resections were done in 17 patients,low anterior resections were done in 3.The effective radiation made the polypoid component flat.The average of reduction rate was 73.8±18.6(%).The histological radiation effects according to Ohboshi-Shimosato’s classificationwere excellent; 6 cases were in Grade IIa,l1 cases were in Grade IIb,3 cases were in Grade III. In 7 patients(35%) perioperative and delayed complications occured.The administration of high doses(total dose 70Gy) of preoperative radiation makes excellent effects without increasing the complications.
