Abstract

The cargo tanker M.V. Kimya, was wrecked off the SW coast of Anglesey, N. Wales in January 1991. The cargo of sunflower oil was spilled into the marine environment and GC/MS analyses of mussel tissue ( Mytilus edulis) have shown enhanced concentrations of linoleic (18 : 2 ω6) and oleic (18 : 1 ω9) acids. At sites close to the wreck, 18 : 2 ω6 concentrations of up to 342 mg g lipid −1 were recorded. This compares with a mean of 9.6 mg g lipid −1 from elsewhere around Anglesey. Results indicate that there has been minimal dispersal of the oil along the coast. Other fatty acids present in the mussels (18 : 3 ω3 and 20 : 2 ω6) suggest there has been some metabolism of the oil by the mussels and this is being investigated further.
