Abstract

One of the aims of this chapter is to introduce the reader to those parts of set theory and topology that are used frequently in the main theme of this text. While providing these preliminaries, for completeness we also consider here almost all basic concepts in point-set topology. The sections covering this material are presented in a manner somewhat different from that used for the other sections. Thus readers with very little or no background in topology may have to do a little (but not much) extra work while studying these sections.
