Abstract

Abdomen dipping and preening movements are described. Fewer preening movements occur when a male is undisturbed than after courtship and more after courtship of 20 females than after a single courtship. Abdomen dipping movements may occur when the male is undisturbed but they occur characteristically after courtship. More abdomen dipping movements follow mating than follow courtship of non-receptive females. These movements are compared to the 'displacement activities' described in other groups of animals.
