Abstract

Background: The etonogestrel subdermal implant (ESI) is the most effective method of contraception and is recommended for adolescents. Although bothersome irregular and frequent bleeding is a common reason for early ESI discontinuation, 22-30% of patients become amenorrheic by 1 year of use. There are data on baseline predictors of abnormal uterine bleeding among adolescent and adult ESI users, but no studies have assessed predictors of amenorrhea. Our objective was to determine what baseline clinical characteristics are associated with amenorrhea in adolescents with an ESI.
